Muzzled
Well my ancient computer, ancient meaning something around ten years old, finally gave up and died. I went through the usual reactions; anger, panic, frustration, grief; until finally arriving at something akin to apathy.
This is the first time I’ve been without a computer since the Commodore 64 hit the market. I used to enjoy being at the bleeding edge of technology. I was one of the earlist enthusiast who jumped on the Linux bandwagon. This was back before X-Windows brought a GUI to Linux, way back when everything was command line driven.
After the C64 I purchased a 386 based system with a whole megabyte of memory and a 20 megabyte hard drive. More capacity than I’d ever need. Next came a clock tweaked 486 running at a blazing 120mhz. Since that one I began building my own computers managing to keep at least one foot near the line that delineates obsolete from state-of-art.
I suppose I am a computer junkie. It’s been two weeks without a computer. I’m limping along using my iPhone, itself a marvel of technology but difficult to use. Typing with one finger is a real treat.
Marvina has a laptop and I could use it if needed. She’s quick to offer it up but it is her computer and I’m reluctant to use it for a number of reasons.
So I’m learning that one really can live without a computer. It’s not fun but the world didn’t end. I’ll just have to complete my adjustment and learn to slow down, discovering what really is important to me and letting go of things not essential to my life.
Posting here will really slow down now. Sorry about that but we live life as it presents itself and the release I’ve found here in my writing will just have to be sacrificed.
